Topic: New laptop

Mom was looking to get a new laptop, in a budget range of $500-550. She has no specific preferences; she doesn't do anything too intense, just browsing internet/mail/ect. Wants to find the best for that price range. If anyone could give me a few ideas would be appreciated. She's been using a desktop she bought me like...8 years ago.

Re: New laptop

Man, I'd have to say just grab an iPad.. but as far as laptops go, don't get Lenovo. That's the only advice I got unfortunately.

Re: New laptop

Probably a tablet of some sorts.

Re: New laptop

Or just go to a computer store and buy her a refurbished one.

Re: New laptop

I think I might actually get an Ipad after watching that.

Re: New laptop

Oh they make Kindles also? Hell yeah.

Re: New laptop

I don't think she could handle figuring out an ipad haha. I think i might just go to best buy with her n see what they have.

And what's bad with lenova's, sheed? Just shitty hardware?

Re: New laptop

Yeah really poorly designed hardware. They don't understand that a GPU and CPU cannot share a single fan... I suppose this is more of a problem for a gamer, but still points to a faulty engineering team which of course affects all Lenovo products.

Re: New laptop

We have had excellent luck with our Lenovo Laptops at work.  We've got 3, but they are all in the 1,200-1,600$ range.  I've never cracked one open or tried gaming on them so I can't speak to the cooling methods applied that were Sheeds concern.

I usually recommend that people buy HP, Dell, Toshiba, or Lenovo.  If they want to spend more, go with Sony or Samsung.

I'd recommend getting anything that uses the HD Graphics 3000.  They are integrated on all sandybridge processors I believe.  Get her an i3/i5 w/ 3-4gb of ram, 250gb HDD Intel HD Graphics 3000.   Nothing too extreme.

On the topic of tablets,  I think the Kindle Fire is only $199.  We gave some away at our Christmas Party and the people that won them have been loving them.  Another guy here at my workplace has a Nook running Honeycomb, and it's pretty slick.  Easy to mod too -- Just load it on the SD, and pop that bitch in.

Re: New laptop

If she/you don't plan on gaming or anything go cheap she can save a couple hundred bucks and it will display email and websites just as good as anything more expensive.

Granted I don't think she'd really need to upgrade for a long while since she doesn't use anything that would really push the computers limits, she still wants something decent that'll last her a long time.

Re: New laptop

ipad is the way to go.  or a macbook air for twice the price.  ipad is great but its a new device, not a replacement device.  if all shes doing it surfing and email it'll be great.  if you travel any at all I suggest getting the model with 3G and only enabling it when you travel.  its 14 a month on ATT with no contract and you can toggle it on an off.

If we started the first sets of PvP gear with asteroids orbiting the shoulders, in a couple seasons you'd be wearing Thrall on your head.

I'll toss the idea to her. I'm just going off the fact she can't stand using my iphone because everything's touch screen lol

I got my girlfriend one for Christmas. She almost had me take it back because she didn't think she would use it when she has a laptop... now she can't put it down and never touches her laptop.

Re: New laptop

You can always go and try them out at the stores. Tablets are big so the touch screen might not be as annoying as on your phone.

Re: New laptop

Atleast you can pirate on a laptop.
